The most eco-friendly meat on earth?

we have an abundance of healthy, sustainable meat right on our doorstep and a real need to utilise this for the benefit of British wildlife.

THE STORY OF WHAT’S IN THE BOX

There are more deer roaming British countryside than ever before. This comes with some unwanted consequences.

Human eradication of natural predators, along with the introduction of four invasive species of deer, has led to a surge in numbers. These deer are innocently eating, moving and producing young, but with such high numbers the landscape does not have the capacity to sustainably support rising populations.

Overpopulation of deer leads to overgrazing, which reduces canopy cover and the density and cover of forest undergrowth, whilst increasing grass coverage in woodlands. Many birds, invertebrates and mammals need a healthy, dense and biodiverse woodland undergrowth to thrive. Overgrazing has been linked to a reduction of other wildlife and plants, such as dormice, butterflies, nightingales, and many other species.

On top of this, deer eat saplings, preventing the natural regeneration of woodland, impacting carbon sequestration efforts crucial for combating global warming.

A healthy woodland captures carbon as it grows but evidence shows that grazing must be dramatically reduced in order to allow new trees to establish quickly and grow successfully. This regeneration process benefits various species, including owls, bats, plants, and fungi.

Good for woodlands, good for you

  • If more of us eat wild venison, the overpopulation of deer and all of the issues that come with it, will take care of itself.

Careful management of deer populations is happening nationwide, and WYLD venison is a by-product of this process. But demand for venison must increase to ensure efforts are successful.

  • This 100% natural meat is packed with essential nutrients to enhance your health. It is easy to cook with and can be used in the same way as other red meats.

Humans have eaten venison since pre-historic times, making it an important part of human evolution. Venison can and should be a healthy, regular addition to our diets.

  • If, in the future, deer populations rebalance or if there is a significant increase in demand that could threaten the sustainability of these populations, we are prepared to cease selling wild venison.

WYLD has always been comitted to harmonious coexistence with nature. We will adjust our practices as needed to ensure the wellbeing of ecosystems.

To give you an idea of where we currently are, to prevent populations from continuing to increase, we need to hunt around 750,000 deer per year in the UK. In 2023 the actual figure sat at 350,000. Meaning we have a long way to go.

SPECIES UNDER THREAT

  • Deer overpopulation is reducing the most important factor for butterflies & moths in woodland; diverse plant life, including a mix of young & mature trees.

Diversity creates habitats & food sources for each life stage, as well as providing a rich habitat for other insects.

  • Woodmice, bank voles, hedgehogs & other small mammals, rely on dense vegetation & diverse woodland plant life.

Destruction by deer reduces food supplies, nesting areas & pathways for endangered dormice. They could become extinct before restoration occurs.

  • A study linked a 10 year increase in deer population, to the decline of five out of 11 woodland bird species that rely on dense shrubs and undergrowth for shelter & breeding.

Nightingale and Willow Tit are red-listed in the UK and at particular risk.
